As far as SS, I'm not certain I understand why you'd have to adjust the brakes every time. If there was a set screw tapped into the dropout, the axle would go as far as that every time.
@Jeremy, with a track end when the wheel moves back and forth the brake pads don't stay aligned. If you used a standard horiz dropout like the campy 1010, regardless of the wheel position in the dropout the brake stay aligned. All of this is only an issue with gearing changes.
